Buddha
Buddha (Bud-dh-a') (the "Awakened One") was born Gautama Siddhartha, a prince of the Shakyas clan in circa 563 BC. A series of incidents, described as the "Four Signs"' set the future Buddha on his predestined path. At the age of 35 he reached the city of Bodh Gaya. After 49 days of solitary meditation he attained Nirvana*, becoming thus The Buddha or "One Who is Fully Awake". Buddhism remains a major living religion of Asia even today. Incidently, Buddha is also revered as the Ninth Avatar** of Lord Vishnu.
